Australia. A land of contrast. From spectacular coastlines to its vast and sparsely inhabited deserts. From the harsh and sometimes unforgiving countryside to the lush, dense rainforests. Australia’s’ beautiful yet sometimes haunting landscapes are some of Mother Nature’s finest work.
So as we prepare for our travels around this great southern land, we found ourselves searching for a ‘place to lay our head’. A place that is as unique as this great land itself. A place to create memories.
The Quest: Somewhere we could spend our nights sitting around a campfire in that delightful state of timelessness only a fire can evoke. Watching the dawn sneak through a valley of mist. Days biking or hiking in nature.
And then we stumbled across YouCamp.
Australia’s Biggest Land Sharing Website
YouCamp is the biggest land sharing website in Australia. An online booking system that connects our farmers with tent-pitchers and grey nomads, like ourselves. Hosts open up their properties to provide an incredible outdoor experience and adventure. Sharing access to some of the most beautiful and relaxing campsites that you will find anywhere across this great country.
You can pitch your own tent, bring your caravan and some properties even offer the luxury of glamping tents and eco-cabins. There are over 500 properties located right around and throughout Australia and growing.
It works because campers are pretty self-sufficient these days. What they bring in they take out, treading lightly on the landscape. But it also provides a successful spin-off business and income for farmers. Happy farmers helping happy travellers, so to speak!
Incredible Outdoor Experiences, for Everyone
The common thread that connects YouCamp properties is that they provide unique landscapes and incredible outdoor experiences. The site connects a community of travellers and hosts who have a shared experience of the great outdoors and a simpler style of travelling.
They see simplicity as the new luxury and something that can be enjoyed whether you are a billionaire or a grey nomad. YouCamp opens up a whole new world of adventure.
Unique Properties, Unique Adventures
YouCamp offers a vast array of properties and accommodation options. Hundreds of properties are listed on the site and each appears to be as unique as the Australian landscape they sit on.
As someone who likes to paddle, paddle and hike, there seem to be endless options for us active baby boomers to enjoy. Right on the properties where we lay our heads.
Kayak, fish, climb a mountain, ride your bike, surf on a private beach, bird watch, pat a lamb, take your dog, harvest organic vegetables or simply kick-back and star-gaze… you get my point!
Easy to Search, Easy to Book
It is really simple to use the YouCamp website. To start with you create an account and fill in your profile (this lets your hosts know who you are). From there you can search for your location, and then refine this search by the number of guests, booking dates, type of accommodation, activities, tours, and amenities you are looking for. I particularly like the ‘terrain’ and ‘property access’ filters.
From the properties I have viewed, the descriptions are really detailed and also include information about disability access. The accommodation features are clearly laid out and a good selection of beautiful photographs of the property and activities have been provided. There is a star rating system and review section available.
Once you have found your desired property, you can either contact the host with an inquiry or send a booking. Hosts must answer within 24 hours and you are not charged until the booking is confirmed. A good thing to note is that you do pay for your booking (via credit card) in full and in advance once the booking has been confirmed. You can make changes to your booking or cancel online.
Also, every booking has a 50 million dollar liability insurance. A nice piece of mind, should any unexpected accidents happen.
Travelling on a Budget
Personally, I like to travel light and on a budget. If you can live ‘off-grid’, you can find peaceful unpowered campsite from AU$10 per night. Powered sites tend to range from AU$10 upwards to around $40 per night.
Beyond this, accommodation types and cost vary dramatically. It really depends on the property. From luxurious island escapes that can be reached only by helicopter to stylish glamping tents or a romantic bush eco cabin there really seems to be a YouCamp experience for everyone!
Happy Farmers, Happy Campers
And whilst we grey-nomads swap stories around the roaring campfires on these private properties, we are also helping out our farmers and landholders of this great southern land. YouCamp provides a spin-off business and income for its owners, establishes new boutique micro-tourism businesses that are great for local economies and helps give property owners a reason to protect the special environments of their land.
