After weeks of anticipation, we’re starting our Great Ocean Road drive trip with a drive from Melbourne to Torquay, a distance of about 100 kilometres.
We fly from the Gold Coast today (11th) and arrived in Melbourne to pick up our wheels. We’ve been upgraded by Europcar at Melbourne airport to a BMW Series 240i Convertible; black in colour (of course).
After getting to understand the engineering niceties of the fold down roof, we set off towards Torquay. We’ve picked this vehicle to give us an opportunity to travel the Great Ocean Road in grand style.
It’s about an hours drive (80 kms) to Geelong, where we stop for a late lunch of barramundi and chips by the waterside. It was nice to kick back and relax with the spring sunshine on our backs.
Geelong has numerous carved wooden bollards along its waterfront. They trace the history of the city, in particular the explorers and founding members of the Geelong area. We took the opportunity to have our photo taken alongside one.
Then it was onto Torquay for the night. Went for a walk along the beach, windy and quite cool for this time of the year. Nevertheless, very enjoyable.
We were taken by the abundant birdlife in the wooded areas along the shoreline. The gardens were simply beautiful; roses, lavender, geraniums. A rainbow of colours.
